Polo
When I saw my first polo match, I was blown away by its beauty and passion. I decided that the only way to capture this passion on canvas was to use bright colors and gold leaf. I combined jewel tone ponies with Caribbean colors and shaded just the faces and arms of the players. I then finished it with a gold leaf background. Recently, I have painted a second colorway, with the polo ponies done in silver and gold leaf and the background black. It is a bit more subdued, but still full of excitement.

Polo Triptych
Inspired by the colors of a peacock’s tail feathers, Wendy Everett’s “Polo Triptych” captures the beholder’s attention. The gold leaf backdrop speaks to the glory and glamor of the “sport of kings,” while the sheet music collaged onto the boots of the players with titles like “Hoe-down” and “Buckaroo Holiday” evoke the rough-riding cowboy flair of American polo. The pastel jerseys worn by the players are inscribed with passionate love letters from Napoleon Bonaparte to his wife, Josephine, and Czarina Alexandra to Czar Nicholas II. “Polo Triptych” captures the energy and dynamism of polo through its surprising pops of color and textures.
Dimensions: 5ft x 11ft gallery wrapped canvas with acrylic, gold and copper leaf with collaged sheet music from Rodeo by Aaron Copland.
