Shells & Surf
As a child I loved to collect shells and was interested in how they grew. Their beauty and variety amaze me and I consider them the jewelry of the Sea.
My appreciation for waves came later when I moved from Michigan (Great Lakes) to New York City and experienced the power of the Atlantic Ocean.
About the Nautilus
The Nautilus shell is the most fascinating shell in the ocean. It is the only shell that has the ability to go up, down, forward, backwards and even turn. How? First it has a tube inside its chambers that fills or empties them with sea water, so that it goes up when empty and down when full. It also has a siphon which can move and acts like a sort of ‘jet propulsion’ rudder as it expels sea water to move the shell in the opposite direction.
On top of that, many scientists believe that the spiral shape of the Nautilus shell is based on the golden ratio, a mathematical equation that is found in nature. Plus, the Nautilus is just plain BEAUTIFUL!
